CIRC SAW CONTROL

In my recent but rather limited experiences with a couple of old klunky circ saws, I've found in the cases where your drawn line disappears under the front of the plate, that it is useful to determine and mark the precise point on the plate that should follow your line, and then keep that point over the line no matter what. The point probably lies directly ahead of the inboard surface of the blade, since everything from there rightward is kerf, and laying a ruler against the blade will probably get you close.

Yields reasonably good results, where "good" is nowhere near what you'd get on a table saw with a fence, but hey..

For the even more precise, lay a piece of wood along that line and clamp it on, so it makes a guide to run the circ saw plate along. Also, use a saw blade appropriate to the job- the nasty big teeth ones for rough work and big lumber will chew the hell out of smaller, finer boards and make ragged edges.
