I
have occasionally done trompe-l'oeil and faux-finish painting for
private homes.

The example in the middle was an interior double-door into a study;
the residents wanted to instead make them look like bevelled-glass
French doors opening into a garden. In the bottom left of this piece,
the family cat looks in.
The example at left is a front door commissioned
by a Boston-area interior designer, and we collaborated on the design
to arrive at just the combination of humor and artitry that she wanted;
the wood framing has been painted in oils with faux-carving of curlicues,
putti and acanthus leaves. The inset panels are a series of scenes
depicting heaven, earth and hell- each is a spoof of a famous historical
painter or genre: there is a scene of putti with blue sky and clouds
above, followed by a Gauguin Tahiti scene and a Dutch genre painting
of villagers drinking. At the bottom is a Hieronymous Bosch scene
showing monsters and buildings in flames.
